Why Nikon Z7 and Z6 recall is a sign of great customer service

May 17, 2019

Nikon has recently issued a recall of some Z7 and Z6 cameras, saying "it has come to our attention that the vibration reduction (VR) feature in some Nikon Z6 and Z7 cameras may not function fully". Youtuber by the name Straight Out Of Camera has a message to fanboys and click baity Youtubers like the donation-begging Fuji shill the Angry Photographer for example. He argues that Nikon in contrast to Sony and especially Fuji, is taking care of their customers and fixing the issue right away instead of putting their head in the sand or blaming the users. He lists several past issues with Fuji cameras that were not addressed by Fuji.

Both Nikon and Canon, who remain market leaders in interchangeable lens cameras, are known to have the best service in the industry. Fuji and Sony often use 3rd parties to repair their products, and often lack the means to offer the proper support that would be needed. They also launch half baked products, which they need to fix months or years later with software updates (Fuji is the biggest culprit here). I'm glad Nikon is always up front and transparent with their users, big props to them. This is one of the reasons why I am a happy customer and still enjoy my D810, which is a fantastic and reliable camera. So are the F-mount lenses, that have served me for years without a single issue, especially my beloved 20mm f/1.8.

    1. No, these comments are terrible! The whole video has a terrible premise, and it shows that the author is a moron. Sony's A7Rii camera never had any issues, it was flawless. World renowned photographers like this one have praised it, and he knows what he is talking about unlike you with your forest tree or roof top snapshots. It just shows what kind of moronic target audience Nikon has. Old farts that take tons of boring photos, while pros buy Sony and take amazing photos. Sony has the best sensors, and better lenses than Canon and Nikon. It's also more reliable, and has features like AF and focus peaking which the others didn't have for a long time until they ripped off Sony! Canon and Nikon are desperate, their business is shrinking while Sony is winning. So they are paying trolls like you to defend their miserable cameras that always have a recall. LOL! How can people be so deluded. Sony will soon have 90% market share, buying Nikon is like throwing money away, in 2 years the brand will disappear, and who will support you then??

  2. By law they're required to fix the issue, so it's not really a sign of great service. Just a sign they've screwed up and are now trying to fix it. Unfortunately they have had many recalls, which means their problem isn't customer service but something further up the tree. It is what it is.

    1. If that is the law, why did Sony and Fuji not recall their cameras? The A7RII and A6300 were notoriously overheating, the Fuji XT-2 was freezing out, and some SD cards were causing issues. They blamed the users. Why don't they follow the law like Nikon?

    2. This thread isn't about Sony or Fuji and I'm not interested in brand loyalty or brand hatred. I'm just saying it as it is. Nikon have had two/three (or more? I don't pay attention) recalls because it is the law to fix a faulty product.

Good customer service should start by having a product that works.

    3. You really are a total loon. Just because you say something is fact doesn't make it so.

      Nice try, Ken ;)

    1. This is disturbing. He is now trying to sell books. I wonder where he gets so much money to afford his expensive gear. We are talking about tens of thousands of dollars for his Fuji gear (and some Nikon).

  5. It seems like the the Angry Thumb is losing it, he's becoming almost hysterical about being left out of the big shill parties on YouTube regarding Fujifilm gear. I don't understand how he can claim to be broke while having that much medium format gear plus all his Nikon gear.

    1. Ha, interesting. I'm not following him anymore. You can update on him and his situation on this post. It's one of my posts with most traffic, so your updates will be seen by more people.

    2. People will get to the bottom of his sources of funding, we know what areas he operates and I hear that a few people have found how to contact him for his photography 'work'

There will be some that make some 'enquiries' for work and just see what he charges, if he even does charge anything. Get ready for a real sh!t storm

  6. Would you be able to post a thing about the Sony Dpreview forum?

Jim Kasson is the only sensible person I've seen on the Sony Dpreview forum. The recent "Sony menu system update" thread says it all really. Nowhere at all was "Canikon" written in the first post, yet MRWEC has fabricated a quote about Canikon and then defended it in a qualifying post saying that was "exactly" what was written. Brand loyalty is to the point the users are literally imagining quotes!

Off topic to this post, but the Sony menu system is diabolical. I don't care what Canon, Nikon, etc. are like. If you want to set up the camera (any Sony camera) for video with picture profiles and whatnot, and then go back to stills and then go back to video, it's a damn nightmare to do it properly. Many things are even worse if you've already used the memory profiles, and many settings can't be set to custom functions either like the users claimed.

It makes zero logical sense for video focus, profile options, aps-c for video, etc. to be in stills menus and it causes needless button pushes so even if you memorise the menu system (which I have) the amount of actions required to change something are unnecessary. Banding occurs at 1/2000sec under some lighting conditions with EFCS, yet Sony doesn't have an auto disable EFCS at 1/2000sec in the menu system.

But hey ho, according to dpreview, this somehow has something to do with canikon and it's their fault. Oh and I think oly was mentioned. Literally none of those brands have any thing to do at all with the sony menu system.

    1. Sorry, I'm not on DP Review or any other photography forums. I also follow very few Youtube channels. Feel free to post these things here, but I am more focused on photography of late, I care less about people arguing about gear.
