List of sedans by German car makers (2020)

March 27, 2020

I love German cars and I've already posted 3 lists featuring Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi, where I listed all their sedans by price. Today I want to list sedans of all main German car manufacturers, so besides the aforementioned 3, I am adding Porsche, Volkswagen and Opel. Opel doesn't sell in North America, but they are legendary in Germany and the rest of Europe (in the UK they are branded under Vauxhall). All the models are sorted by the price.

I will be sharing my opinion about which car is my preferred one in a particular segment. Here's the whole list for all the cars (prices are from March 2020 as listed on their US websites, except for Opel, where the price was taken on the German website and converted to USD.

Entry level German sedans
Price segment: 20,000 - 35,000

My favorite car in this segment would be the Mercedes-Benz A-Class (1), followed by Opel Insignia (2) and Audi A3 (3). I would pass on the Passat and opted for a Japanese brand in that price level, like Toyota, Honda, or Nissan.

VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT: From 22,995 USD

MERCEDES-BENZ A-CLASS: From 32,800 USD

OPEL INSIGNIA: From 33,150 USD

AUDI A3: From 33,300 USD

Entry level luxury German sedans
Price segment: 35,000 - 50,000

My favorite car in this segment would be Mercedes-Benz CLA (1), followed by Mercedes Benz C-Class (2), and BMW Series 2 (3). Vokswagen Arteon looks like a good value car as well, however the classics such as BMW Series 3, Series 4 and Audi A4 don't appeal to me much due to their design which I don't like much. The Audi A5 has a great design, but in that price level I'd rather get the C-Class.

VOLKSWAGEN ARTEON: From 35,845 USD

MERCEDES-BENZ CLA-CLASS: From 36,650 USD

AUDI A4: From 37,400 USD

BMW SERIES 2: From 37,500 USD

BMW SERIES 3: From 40,750 USD

MERCEDES-BENZ C-CLASS: From 41,400 USD

AUDI A5: From 42,900 USD

BMW SERIES 4: From 44,750 USD

Mid-end luxury German sedans
Price segment: 50,000 - 75,000

My favorite car in this segment is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (1), followed by Audi A6 (2) and BMW Series 5 (3). The Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS are not bad, either, but the price point is substantially higher, and I think you don't get that much more than the classic sedans, just a bit more sporty outlook, that's all. I prefer classic, and it would also cost me less.

BMW SERIES 5: From 53,900 USD

MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS: From 54,050 USD

AUDI A6: From 54,900 USD

AUDI A7: From 69,000 USD

MERCEDES-BENZ CLS-CLASS: From 69,950 USD

High-end luxury German sedans
Price segment: 75,000 - 100,000

My favorite car in this segment is Audi A8 (1), followed by Porsche Panamera (2) and the BMW Series 8 (3). I don't like the design of BMW Series 7, those grills are terribly oversized. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class looks great, but it's a bit expensive compared to the rest. It also gives me old man vibes (and I still feel very young).

BMW SERIES 8: From 84,900 USD

AUDI A8: From 85,200 USD

BMW SERIES 7: From 86,800 USD

PORSCHE PANAMERA: From 87,200 USD

MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS: From 94,250 USD

Super luxury German sedans
Price segment: Above 100,000

This is of course an amazing car and in a class of its own. If I had money to buy a car in this price range, I would probably just buy a C-Class model with lots of accessories, and save the rest. I think such car makes you a target of people you don't want to mess with, and I think it's more suitable for governments and super-rich who have the necessary security personnel around them.

MERCEDES-MAYBACH S-CLASS: From 173,000 USD

What would be your favorite German sedans?
