I don't recommend the new iPhone SE!

May 13, 2020

I just had the chance to get my hands on the new iPhone SE (see pricing in Taiwan), and I have to say I was quite shocked: The phone is tiny! I was really interested to buy it in order to replace my old iPhone 8 Plus, which has a cracked back and front. It served me very well for 3 years, but now I feel it's time to replace it. In these times of uncertainty, I don't want to spend too much money on a phone, so SE seemed like the perfect fit. But I buried this idea as soon as I held the phone in my hand.

The iPhone 8 Plus is for me a smartphone with a perfect size. It's big, it's 1080p, and it doesn't have a notch. I'm not a fan of Face ID, and I think Apple is charging a premium on a feature that is worse than Touch ID in terms of speed and convenience. So now I'm actually considering to buy another iPhone 8 Plus. An Apple reseller in Taipei is still selling it new, and the 128 GB version that I'm interested in costs only 580 USD. That's about the same amount Apple charges for the smaller and newer iPhone Se with 128 GB. Sure, you get the latest processor, but everything else is worse. The 8 Plus was very speedy when it was new, and the battery life was really long. I could not see any speed difference between the SE and the 8 Plus, but the bigger screen is so much better on the 8 Plus, so I'm thinking to opt for that one. I will decide in the next days.
