Photography community calls out Tony Northrup on his Nikon nonsense

Community calls out Tony Northrup on his Nikon nonsense

In a very predictable fashion, large American photography gear Youtuber Tony Northrup published his video reaction after Nikon revealed their upcoming mid-range full frame cameras, the Nikon Z6 II and Z7 II. As I have written earlier this year, Tony is biased against Nikon. Most of his videos are negative and talk about Nikon not innovating, their cameras not being as good as competition, and being close to bankruptcy. This is a formula that other big photography gear channels have also adopted, such as Fro Knows Photo and Matt Granger, however the latter has become increasingly irrelevant

All three Youtubers have launched similar videos, bemoaning to the vast majority of customers fairly irrelevant omissions by Nikon such as a the flip out screen or certain high end video features that majority of users won't use. All three Youtubers have been called out by the community as being disproportionately negative and overly critical of two cameras that are seen by the vast portions of the online photography community as great updates. Since Tony is known to delete or shadow ban critical comments after 2-3 days (I have proved that in one of my older posts), I have decided to screen grab his whole comment section under his latest video. These comments are calling out his nonsense (the same way Ken Wheeler's was called out on the Z5), which shows the disconnect between these channels and the actual photography community. This is a great sign for Nikon, because even some Nikon fans were not sure in 2018, when the first generation of Z6 and Z7 cameras came out. Despite being solid products, there were some criticisms that were harder to defend, such as a lack of lenses, lack of dual card slots, lack of a proper battery grip and a noticeably worse continuous AF as compared to competition. Despite all that, Nikon sold 280,000 of these cameras in 2019, which was a great success. They have also addressed all software issues with firmware updates, launched 15 more lenses, that cover most popular focal points, as well launched the Z50 and Z5, two solid lower priced offerings in the Z system. What Nikon has achieved in merely 2 years is beyond amazing, and the online community is finally seeing that, so it's much harder for these channels to produce click bait and get away with it. Nikon is growing and serving the market like never before, and this is making a lot of "influencers" worried.

Here is the initial community reaction to his video (83 comments out of the first 100 that I saw):

  1. It's amazing how many times these """photography youtubers""" claim to be economy experts, making these downward arrows on every video about Nikon, and proclaiming doom and gloom for the company. On the other hand, Nikon sold a ton of these first gen cameras and they just had a few lenses. Now picture 2021: If this annoying virus gives us a break and the Olympics take place, they will sell a sh*t load of D6 cameras, the 120-300 f/2.8 lenses, as well as all the Z cameras and lenses. If they manage to launch the Z9 (or whatever that camera will be called) before Olympics, that will be another big revenue boost. The market is already so bad, I think it can only get better from here. And once they start to offer even more cheap Z models for entry level, their share will definitely increase and the numbers will start to look positive.

Nikon has great products, everybody who buys Z cameras usually defends them, that's why in 2020 the community outcry is so big, because a lot of people love these cameras and know he's talking BS.

  3. Great post! Thanks for featuring my comment as well. I think Tony is really desperate for attention.

  4. I'm a Sony A7 III shooter, and even I see the anti-Nikon bias by Tony. These cameras are great updates and priced very competitively. I hope this will push Sony to release the A7 IV asap, and make it much better. I am tired of the menu and the old EVF, I hope they catch up with Nikon in these aspects. Competition is good!

  5. Somehow I missed this, because I don't follow much of his stuff anymore, or generally Youtube. I rather spend time with other stuff. With that said, I am not surprised, these wannabe "influencers" are becoming more and more irrelevant in today's world.

  6. Tony is so anti-Nikon, it's annoying at this point. If he thinks he will actually influence real people not to buy, he is mistaken. People are these days way smarter.
