CASIO F-91W review

March 21, 2020

I own 6 watches, and the Casio F-91W is the cheapest watch I've ever got for myself. It cost me 450 NTD, which was about 15 USD at that time a few years ago. I can't say I really wore it a lot until recently, but I bought it for sentimental reasons. I used to have a watch like this in the 1990s, and when I saw it in one of the stores here in Taipei, I had to have it. Launched in 1989, this watch is legendary for every kid who used to grow up in the 1990s. Just having a watch in the early teens made you look cool, and electronic watches were really hip among kids, because they looked modern, they looked like they were at the forefront of innovation.

With 21g in weight, this watch weighs like nothing. When I wear it I don't really feel like I'm having a watch on. You can wear it all day and sleep with it, it will never bother you. The strap is very soft and comfortable.

The strap is also very long and will comfortably fit thicker wrists as well. Unless you're a body builder, you should be fine.

With 8.5 mm in thickness, this watch is incredibly thin.

The case back is made of a small stainless steel plate that is screwed on with 4 small screws. Mine says it's made in Thailand.

Casio says they're still producing 3 million of these watches per year, and in recent years the watch has a bit of a resurgence, since retro stuff is becoming very popular with the youth. For me this watch just brings back fond memories of better times. It's also the ultimate beater watch for me: Decent quality, reliable and cheap. Doesn't bother you, doesn't stand out, but shows time pretty accurately, as well as offers alarm, light, stop watch, and day-date functionality. What more do you need these days? Not much. This is my favorite watch right now, and I wear it the most of all my watches. I'm back to the basics, because the world seems to reset a bit, too.
