New CASIO G-Shock 2020 Spring & Summer Collection launched

March 20, 2020

Casio just launched 4 amazing new G-Shock models from various series as part of their 2020 Spring & Summer Collection (G-Steel, MR-G, MT-G and classic square). They made some amazing videos to introduce these watches, and in this post I will list them out for you, and share some basic information about them, as well as my personal opinion.

1. G-STEEL GST-B300

The GST-B300 is a modified version of the GST-B200, and is "the first G-STEEL watch with a front button, which adopts a new Carbon Core Guard structure that delivers superior shock resistance by leveraging the lightness and outstanding rigidity of carbon fiber," says Casio in their press release. It's a nice looking watch, but I personally like the GST-B200 series more, as it looks more elegant and refined.

2. MRG-B2000SH "Shougeki-Maru"

This special edition watch, which is limited to 400 pieces world wide, was inspired by the traditional kabuto (helmet) worn by Japanese samurai, says Casio in their press release. Casio further states: "Kabuto were worn by Japanese samurai when heading into battle and are known for their samurai aesthetic and symbolizing the strong convictions of samurai. These qualities resonate with the MR-G pursuit of ultimate toughness and aesthetics. Each bezel is individually hand carved by Masao Kobayashi, a metalsmith highly skilled in the technique of chasing, with the image of a dragon climbing to the heavens." The price is not yet released by Casio, but judging by the price of a similar special edition watch from 2018, the MRG-G2000HA "Arashi-Tuchime" (link to press release), this won't be cheap. For your reference, the regular MRG is priced at 3000 USD, the Arashi-Tuchime edition cost 7400 USD. The video and the story behind it are amazing, the watch itself looks a bit gaudy for my taste. I would be shy to wear it. I guess this is more of a collector's item to be worn on very special occasions. It's more of a piece of art than a watch.

3. MTG-B1000VL

This version of the MT-G series watch is supposed to evoke volcanic lightning. Casio states in their press release: "The MTG-B1000VL reproduces the frightening yet beautiful blue, purple, and gold colors of the lightning caused by a volcanic eruption with a rainbow ion-plated bezel and a multi-colored dial. The rainbow-colored bezel finished with ion plating is overlaid with the image of the rare atmospheric phenomenon of volcanic lightning, which produces subtle differences in coloring that allow each wearer to enjoy their own unique glow." I am personally owning the original MTG-B1000-1A that has the exact same features (read my review), and I'm not so impressed with the design of this model. It's too colorful for my taste, and not very nicely done. Just not my cup of tea.

4. GMW-B5000CS

Casio says in their press release that this classic square designed watch has an "exterior with full metal construction of all outer parts while maintaining the shape of the first G-SHOCK ever—the DW-5000C released in 1983—and adding further advanced functionality including radio wave reception, theTough Solar power system, and smartphone connectivity." For me personally this is definitely the most impressive release out of all 4 watches due to that interesting design, but I wished they also had a raising version. I'm just not a big fan of these metal squares, for me the classic G-Shock square is a beater watch that is cheap and indestructible. These metal ones kind of betray these two notions.

In conclusion

All in all a great day for Casio. The company keeps moving forward and really impressing with their designs and innovations. I am looking forward to their next versions of these designs.
