Ken Wheeler a.k.a The Angry Photographer got called out by his own followers on
the nonsense he spewed about the new Nikon Z5 camera. The vast consent among
photography enthusiasts is that the Nikon Z5 and its bigger brother the Nikon Z6 are
excellent cameras which you can get for a very good price. Both cameras have
some downsides, but that is to be expected for full frame cameras under 2000 USD and under 1500 USD.
Paired with the Z glass which is widely regarded as superb by those who shoot
with it, these are some amazing tools for hobbyists and pros. So what did he say in his video? Basically the complete opposite of what I mentioned, and sprinkled a few lies in between to trash Nikon and the new Z5 even more. Here's the main part of what he says to spare you watching this garbage.
He says the camera is not good, because it has an old sensor and therefore he says it will have inferior autofocus as compared to Sony or Fuji X cameras (that's a logical fallacy). He also says the camera has no Phase Detect AF which is just a lie (Nikon lists the AF as "Hybrid phase-detection/contrast AF with AF assist" on their website). He goes on saying it has no top display, 1.7 crop factor in 4K, no true vertical grip control. He says the camera is a mirrorless equivalent of a D5200 with a full frame sensor (again, a lie). He then says all Z mount lenses are pretty junky (another lie). He also calls this camera a "dumbed down turd muffin", and continues to talk about why one should not buy this camera and instead opt for a used D810 or an APS-C camera (failing to mention that the Z5 offers IBIS). In the last parts of the video he says that he is the most unbiased and knowledgable person on Nikon, because he owns more Nikon cameras than you. That's a standard Trump-like speech he gives at the end of all the videos where he attacks Nikon, because he knows deep down that Nikon's full frame Z cameras deliver better image quality than any Fuji X camera (pretty much every photography enthusiast with half a brain knows it, too).
Having gear is one thing, anyone can buy gear, especially if idiots give them money because they beg for donations, but the fact is, he's still not able to produce any photography of note besides snapshots of his back garden with cats and flowers, or an occasional horse photo where he cuts off parts of the animal because he's not even able to properly frame an object.

It is possible to think that the Z5 is overpriced for what it is and that Nikon should be aiming higher, not lower, with Z bodies, AND that Ken Wheeler is a fraud and a piece of shit at the same time.

DeleteIt definitely makes sense. There are more capable cameras in Nikon's own lineup at the same price, and that kit lens doesn't seem like a great place to spend resources for a company that still hasn't released a f/2.8 zoom trio or a decent flash system for the Z.
DeleteI agree with you on the current price, it's too high, especially in some countries in Europe, but I think the price will go down in half a year and this will become very attractive. I expect it to be around 1000 USD by end of the year.

ReplyDeleteI think the Z5 is ok priced, given the price of the Z6. It's Z mount, put any lens you want. If one doesn't care for high FSP, the Z5 is a great full frame mirrorless. The Angry Photographer is angry because the Z5 is better than the Fuji X-pro 3, and cheaper.
ReplyDeleteI always thought Ken's fans were sheep, but I'm glad not all of them are. He has to be called out more for the lies and nonsense he is spewing out every day. I really wonder how can people waste their time listening to stuff like "Einstein was an idiot" and "Nikon Z glass is junky".

DeleteDo you know Ken Rockwell's blog? He basically ripped him off, used his info when he made those old lens videos without quoting him. The dude has no portfolio, but claimed to be a professional photographer. He got exposed during the shoot-out with Lanier.
DeleteNot only exposed but absolutely reemed! he then tried to get Jason arrested for somethign he didnt do, once even stating he raped a model, which was fasle. Pretty sure thats an arrestable oofence to accuse someone of such with no evidence whatsoever.
DeleteYeah, I've seen Rockwell's blog. To be fair, I don't have a lot of respect for him, either. Many of his "reviews" are just spec sheet lists. It's clear he hasn't handled some of the cameras he writes about or has shot with them for very long. I'm more partial to Thom Hogan's. As far as I'm concerned the whole YouTube thing with these douchebags should just dry up and blow away.
DeleteKen always says he has these photography 'gigs' for product shots, yet what he has shown of this are utter garbage images showing a college levl of skill at absolute best. He is a fraud in every way it is possible to be such.
ReplyDeleteI get very angry when i see people support his BS. He also posts political right wing nonesense on his instagram and is very pro trump, which is very very worrying indeed. The man is racist and vile and needs a reality check.
You should have seen his now suspended twitter account, it was 100% far right political propaganda and he would verbally abuse left wing politicians directly on their timelines with very hateful comments which eventually led to his suspension.
ReplyDeleteI really can not believe the level of BS this guy spreads and the followers, he is poor little guy that knows something knows someone and only is sharing this info for your own good, he is also an Illuminati, poor, undateable, a viewer gave him a Z4, no money, and knows the true about everything, honestly I don't understand how people can follow him, is really sad from the human race perspective.

ReplyDeleteOh this guy! I first heard about him only a few months ago. His reviews are only based on what he claims himself and with no proof. He just keeps on repeating "This is the best lens I have ever used.", etc.
