iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro: First impressions in Taipei's Apple Store

October 15, 2019

Apple just launched new iPhones a few weeks ago (the iPhone 11 family of phones), and as a tradition, I went to check them out at the Apple store in Taipei. This time I went to the newly opened flagship store outside of Taipei 101 at Xinyi A13, and not to the older one inside Taipei 101. It clear why Apple chose to build a separate store outside the landmark on one of the most expensive pieces of land in Taipei, as it enables them huge visibility in the largest pedestrian area in the city. It's a big advertising platform for whatever the latest and greatest product they have launched, and so far whenever I visited the store was full, at least on the upper level (there's a basement level as well).

The Xinyi A13 store is heavily promoting the new iPhone 11 (here a full size shot).

Hands on

I visited the store during an evening on a week day, and while the upper part of the store was crowded, the basement area which is even larger, was empty and I could get my hands on every model and every color. Here I'm sharing just 3 of them: The iPhone 11 Pro (Midnight Green and Silver), and the iPhone 11 (White).

iPhone 11 Pro Max (Midnight Green)

The front part looks like last year's iPhone Xs Max.

The back side looks nice, I like the mat finish.

The side view.

The notch looks same as last year's, too.

A sideview of the tri-camera. It's not as bad in real as it looks on the pics.

The OLED screen is crisp and nice.

iPhone 11 Pro Max (Silver)

This is my favorite color and model of all the new iPhones.

Looks and feels very premium.

A side view.

The tri-camera, a close up.

I'd love to own one, but the price is just too high.

iPhone 11 (White)

This would be my second preferred choice, if I needed a new phone.

The aluminum looks cheaper than stainless glass.

A side view.

The screen is good, but not as crisp as OLED.

The huge bezel does bother me, to be honest.

Conclusion

The iPhone Pro Max feels great in the hand, it feels quite heavier than my similarly sized iPhone 8 Plus. One thing that bothered me is the lack of Force Touch. I'm also not too comfortable with Face ID, but I guess I could get used to it. But the biggest issue is the price. Of course I have money, I could afford any iPhone, but maybe my German roots tell me not to buy this phone because I don't see it as a good value. My iPhone 8 Plus is still running well after 2 years. It has a broken back, but it runs well. Only if it breaks down completely I will consider to buy one of the new phones.
