List of all G-Shock MUDMASTER watches

April 20, 2020

I'm a big CASIO G-Shock MUDMASTER fan, and also an owner of one model since 2018 (the GG-1000RG-1A). One of my most popular posts on this blog is my comparison between the original MUDMASTER GWG-1000 and GG-1000 Series, but when I published it in 2017, there were only 2 Series of this watch. Meanwhile the MUDMASTER line expanded to 4 different series in total, and several special edition models. There are over 30 models on my list, all of them launched between 2015 and 2020. CASIO is really very productive, but that provides a challenge for fans to understand all the differences. Check each series first, and then an overview of the key features at the bottom.

1. MUDMASTER GWG-1000 Series (Mar 2015)

The GWG-1000 is the OG of this line. It's still the most expensive and the most bulky of all the MUDMASTER series. CASIO often brands it as the "Triple-Sensor" one, because it offers a compass, an altimeter and barometer, as well as a thermometer. I'd say if you want the ultimate toughness, this is the MUDMASTER to choose, it seems the most durable to me, as it's the only one that has a sapphire crystal instead of a less scratch resistant mineral crystal that are found on other series. This one also has a better LCD screen that looks more like an OLED screen. As for the value, I don't think for your average G-Shock fan it's a good one. If you're a pro skier or snowboarder, or a hiker, choosing this watch is a no brainer. If you're just going to wear it as a fashion statement and mostly roam around the city, opt for a different cheaper one from the other series.

2. MUDMASTER GG-1000 Series (Mar 2016)

The GG-1000 was launched a few months after the original GWG-1000, and is basically the cheap alternative to the original one. It's smaller and lighter, less bulky, and has less sensors. The LCD display is also more plain, there is no sapphire crystal, nor a central button to easily switch on the light. While the original is solar powered, this one only has the battery option. With that said, it's still a great MUDMASTER: It's way more affordable (it costs more than half of the OG), and it's still a nice design - maybe a bit outdated in 2020, but still wearable in my opinion. I would definitely prefer a solar powered version of this watch, that would make it perfect, but CASIO had to cost down somewhere to push the price down, so the solar module was omitted.

3.1 MUDMASTER GWG-100 Series (Dec 2017)

The GWG-100 was launched a year and a half after the GG-1000 and it's basically a kind of refresh, or a reinterpretation of that watch. In addition, it added solar powering and time synch via terrestrial radio waves (Multi Band 6). With that said, CASIO removed all the sensor from this one, and replaced the time module, which now looks more like the old G-STEEL. I love the additions, but I'm not fond of this design. This watch was mainly sold in Japan, and briefly appeared in North America as well, before it was sold out. For me it looks kind of cheap, but it's actually more expensive than the GG-1000. Very interesting strategy by CASIO. We will never know whether it paid off, though. I'm sure there are some fans of this versions, because G-Shock fans are a plenty all over the world.

3.2 MUDMASTER GSG-100 Series (Feb 2018)

The GSG-100 is basically the exactly same watch as the GWG-100 that was launched merely a few months before in Japan. This version however is meant as a global release, and the only difference is that they removed the MULTI BAND 6 functionality, so you can't use terrestrial radio waves to synch your watch's time. That's a bummer, but on the other hand, the price dropped significantly to around 280 USD, which makes it the cheapest MUDMASTER in the world. It's also the lightest. So if you want to join the MUDMASTER club and have a very small budget, this is the watch to get. Now some may wonder why does CASIO make this so complicated, but I wish I was able to answer you that. Nevertheless, that's how it is.

4. MUDMASTER GG-B100 Series (Jul 2019)

The GG-B100 is the latest MUDMASTER, that looks very different than most MUDMASTERS before that. It's the first series that has a carbon case, and the first with the Mobile Link, an active Bluetooth connection between your watch and your smartphone, that enables time synch and setting various features like World Time. It's also the first MUDMASTER that comes with a Step Counter sensor, which even the OG doesn't have. With that said, unfortunately this series lacks TOUGH SOLAR, which is for me a very important feature. It does have a central light button, 4 sensors and overall looks most contemporary, most 2020 of them all. If I was in the market to purchase a MUDMASTER in 2020, I would definitely chose a model among this series. One concern I do have, I must add: How strong is the battery drain due to Bluetooth connection? Might be something to consider, before you buy one.

Here's an overview I made of the key features of every MUDMASTER series. You can see that CASIO made it very complicated for some reason, so hopefully this will help you get a better understanding. I will update this post from time to time.
