G-Shock G-LIDE GBX-100 announcement

March 6, 2020

CASIO G-Shock just announced their latest series called GBX-100 Japanese website 価格.com reports. This is a new line which is part of the G-LIDE sub-series, a collection of classic square watches that are meant for surfers. While the watch looks a bit like the classic square (see my full list of classic squares here), it has a resin enclosure and band, but the core of the watch is in a stainless steel case. The weight and size are a bit in between the classic square model like the G-5600E which I own, and the huge GX-56/GXW-56, or the so called "King of G-Shocks".

The specialty of this watch is that it comes with a high-definition MIP LCD. MIP stands for "memory in pixel". These displays are developed by Sharp, and are explained like this: "The Memory LCD combines matrix technology with a one-bit memory circuit embedded into every pixel, so information is retained once it's written. This allows design of products with ultra-low power consumption and long battery life. It also delivers higher resolution, shock and temperature tolerance than e-paper (electronic paper) displays." This looks very interesting to me, and I want to wait and see what other colors and band options Casio will make available later this year, before I get one for myself.

The launch price of the watch will be around 225 USD, if we convert the yen to USD today. I suppose we can expect more models at higher MSRPs later this year.

  1. I really wanna see this watch in real, I have some concerns about the new LCD screen. Any idea how the battery life is of this watch? Will there be a Tough Solar version?
